What Does Rotomolded Mean?

Rotomolded is another term for the manufacturing process known as rotational molding. It is a method that has long been used to form a variety of plastic objects and products. An example being TranPak’s rotomolded plastic bins. Other examples are plastic toys, dolls, planters, chairs, slides, canoes, storage tanks, bins, the list goes on and on.

The Process

Plastic powder is placed into a heated hollow mold and continuously rotated so it melts and disperses evenly around the inside edges of the mold. The rotation continues during both the heating and cooling phases. After cooling, the object shrinks and comes away from the mold, allowing for easy removal.

Advantages of Rotational Molding

  • Ability to create very strong single-piece objects/products for better sanitation
  • Consistent wall thickness
  • Different parts can be molded together as one
  • Ability to create strong thick corners
  • The actual molds are often more cost effective to produce than other process molds (such as: injection, structural, compression, and thermoforming.)
  • Less material is wasted during production which assists with cost effectiveness
  • Additives may be included in the main material to meet standards for things like food safety, fire resistance or extra durability
  • A process called ‘stop rotational molding’ enables varying thicknesses (i.e. thick bottom, thinner walls)
